Foundation Announces Grants for 2016-17 Academic Year

The Trustees of The Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation have approved forty-four grants for 2016-17, awarding $2,145,843 for scholarships and fellowships.

Grants totaling $1,406,834 are designated for student scholarships at forty-three colleges and universities. Within this total, $507,834 will be in the form of matching challenge grants to build Newcombe-endowed scholarship funds at thirty-six institutions. Additionally, the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation will receive $739,009 to continue administration of the Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships program through 2016-17.

The 2016-17 awards bring the Newcombe Foundation’s cumulative grant awards since 1981 to $65.4 million. Based upon thirty-five years of institutional reports to the Foundation, over 39,500 Newcombe Scholarship awards have assisted students at 102 colleges and universities. Also since 1981, 1,214 Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships have been funded through annual grants to the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. At last report, 106 Newcombe-endowed scholarship funds at sixty-four universities and colleges had a combined market value of $21.7 million; these funds generated $933,000 toward Newcombe Scholarships in 2015-16.
