January 2014 – The Trustees and staff of The Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation are deeply grateful for the life and work of Janet Adams Fearon, who died on January 17 in Princeton, New Jersey, after a long illness.
Daughter of the late Arthur and Margaret Adams, she is survived by her husband Dana, son James, daughter Mary Fearon Jack, five grandchildren, brother and sister-in-law Robert and Marilyn Adams, other relatives, and many friends. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville, NJ, which Dana served as Minister from 1960 to 2002.
Members of Janet’s family were friends of Charlotte Rachel Wilson Newcombe’s family throughout Mrs. Newcombe’s life (1890-1979). Through Mrs. Newcombe’s generosity, Janet attended Wellesley College, from which she graduated in 1960.
Janet served as the first Executive Director of The Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation, from 1979 through 2007, working closely with her good friend and Associate Executive Director Sallie Campbell. During those years, the Foundation awarded $45.8 million in grants that supported more than 33,000 fellowships and scholarships at more than one hundred colleges and universities, and initiated fifty-four endowed scholarship funds with combined value over $12 million. Janet continued her service as one of the founding Trustees of the Foundation until her death.
Throughout her life, Janet exemplified cheerfulness, kindness, grace, good will and faithfulness. Through the ongoing work of the Newcombe Foundation, her efforts will continue to bear fruit for many years to come.
