The Foundation’s Grantmaking History

Each spring, the Newcombe Foundation determines its fellowship, scholarship and endowment awards for the coming academic year. Final data on the distribution of student awards is compiled from reports submitted by participating colleges and universities at the end of each academic year. Thus, awards determined in the spring of 2016 will benefit students during the 2015-16 academic year, and final data on these awards will be available in late 2017.

From 1981-82 through 2016-17, the Foundation has awarded $65.4 million in grants to provide scholarships and fellowships in higher education.

  • The Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships program, administered by the Institute for Citizens & Scholars, has received $23.5 million and 1,214 nationally selected promising scholars have been named as Newcombe Fellows.
  • Over 39,500 Newcombe Scholarships have been awarded to students at 102 colleges and universities through $47.3 million in grants from the Foundation and matching funds secured by institutional partners.
  • One-hundred six Newcombe-endowed scholarship funds have been established at sixty-four higher education institutions. Most endowment grants from the Foundation have been augmented by matching funds from other donors. Income from these endowed funds is applied each year toward Newcombe Scholarships awarded to students. The latest reported value of these funds is $21.7 million. To date, they have provided over $8.8 million for Newcombe Scholarships.
